Human-Horse Programmes

Our Therapeutic Equine-Assisted Programmes

Horses are deeply sentient beings, naturally attuned to the present moment due to their instinct as prey animals. This makes them uniquely sensitive and responsive companions for people, particularly those who are struggling with their physical or mental health.

“Through professionally facilitated sessions, we help people harness the powerful, healing connection between horse and human to support wellbeing, personal growth, and resilience.”

Dawn Neil, Head of Education and Equine Assisted Services

We offer a range of therapeutic equine-assisted programmes tailored to different needs:

Equine Assisted Activities Session

Learn hands-on and transferable skills in caring for horses and ponies, including stable management and daily routines.

 Equine Assisted Learning Session

A focused session/s with a learning outcome designed to support specific social or emotional goals through interactions with our horses and ponies.

 Equine Assisted Wellbeing Session

A calming, therapeutic experience in the presence of horses and ponies, supporting overall emotional and physical wellbeing.

Wellies for Wellness

A unique blend of practical horse care and therapeutic activities, designed for families or community groups to build connection and wellbeing together.

Our experienced team can recommend which of our programmes may best suit your needs.

Please note:  While we do not currently offer equine-assisted psychotherapy—sometimes referred to as “equine therapy”—which involves working with a licensed mental health professional during sessions, our team are qualified equine-assisted learning facilitators.  You can learn more about our standards here.

Funding This Vital Work

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is entirely funded by the generosity of our supporters through donations and gifts in wills.

Some participants in our equine-assisted programmes receive funding, and wherever possible, we help cover costs to ensure these life-changing services are accessible to those who need them most. Donations towards this area of our work are always deeply appreciated and make a direct impact on people’s lives.
