Susie

Susie

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 15

Breed: Welsh B

Height: 12.3 hh

Gender: Mare

Colour/Markings: Grey

Personality
Susie is pretty laid back and relaxed in her routine. She shows us that she likes attention, such as grooming. She enjoys any type of enrichment and is a firm lover of marmite. Susie takes a few weeks to settle into a new home but is easy to manage especially when in a routine.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Susie has previously had laminitis and equine metabolic syndrome. This means her grazing has to be strictly managed by reducing her sugar intake from the grass and hay, to maintain her weight appropriately. She has a melanoma and can be quite sensitive in that area, so she prefers it to be left undisturbed. Regular monitoring will be needed to ensure her wellbeing. Susie currently wears boots when walking on hard or stony ground. She may need to wear them in the field if the ground is hard.

Training Level:

Susie is not under any specific training. She is well behaved for the vet and farrier. She is great to bath and to have her feet picked out.

Susie's Past

Susie arrived in the Sanctuary in 2021 when her former owner could no longer care for her.

Susie's Future

Rehoming Fee: £50

Susie would be best suited to a home that has restricted grazing, as she can gain weight easily and needs to have her grass intake managed due to her previous laminitis and EMS.

She is respectful of electric fencing.

Susie can be rehomed into a herd, but she’s also happy with one other pony she can bond with. She’s very easy-going as long as she has a companion; she can be left alone, but she may call out, so she would need support in gradually adjusting to a new environment.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Susie as she settles in her new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
