Pee Dee

Pee Dee

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 24

Breed: Hill Pony

Height: 11.1h

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Bay

Personality
Pee Dee is relaxed, confident, laid back and gentle. He gets on with other ponies. He loves enrichment, such as a rummage box, snuffle mats and treat balls. He is easy to catch, worm, groom and pick his feet out. He loves to see people and will come to the gate when you call his name. He may also follow you around the field inquisitively, asking for cuddles.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Pee Dee has previously had an episode of laminitis, most likely due to his equine metabolic syndrome, which makes him prone to reoccurrence, as well as being diagnosed with PPID (Cushing’s disease). These conditions are controlled by keeping him in a field with poor-quality grazing and regulating his weight. Pee Dee is on pain relief to maintain his comfort levels with his lameness issues, and this will need to be monitored by the vets along with regular annual blood tests. Pee Dee is on daily medication. He is being rehomed on our Prime Pastures scheme, where we can contribute towards the cost of his veterinary care.

Training Level:

Pee Dee is not currently in any training. He used to be a riding pony but has retired for a more relaxed life in his older age. He isn't a huge fan of the hose pipe but will stand with treats or a lick.

Pee Dee's Past

Pee Dee came to the Sanctuary as part of our 2018 merger with another charity. We have few details of his life before this.

Pee Dee's Future

Rehoming Fee: Rehoming fee: Not applicable. (Prime Pastures Scheme)

Pee Dee’s ideal home would be with another equine with similar grazing needs and with someone experienced in having equines with equine metabolic syndrome. His grazing should be restricted as he can easily put on weight and high intakes of sugar in the grass may increase his risk of laminitis.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Pee Dee as he settles in his new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
