Blackie

Blackie

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 10

Breed: Dales pony

Height: 14.1 hh

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Black

Personality
Blackie is gentle, laid back, and confident with humans and herd mates. He gets on easily with others but likes to be first at the gate. With bigger horses he is more likely to keep out of the way. He gets excited to see people, often whickering and trotting over and he loves a fuss. He is easy to catch, groom, clip, worm and merge into new herd. Blackie loves carrots, treat balls, and snuffle mats.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Blackie lives with sweet itch which means he needs to be rugged frequently to protect him from fly and midge bites. As he can become quite itchy, we regularly use creams and fly spray throughout the year. Blackie has had lameness issues in the past, so he needs to be monitored with 6-monthly lameness vet reviews. Due to this, he tends to struggle holding his legs up for long periods of time especially during farrier visits, so he has pain relief in advance for this to make him more comfortable. He would be best suited to a flat paddock for this reason. His lameness checks would be financially supported through our prime pastures scheme. Blackie would be happy living out, in a preferably, windy coastal area as he has equine asthma, but if stabled, he would require a dust free bedding option and soaked hay.

Training Level:

Blackie isn't currently in any training as he is relaxed and easy to handle.

Blackie's Past

Blackie was rescued alongside four other equines in August 2021. His owners were suffering with their own health issues and this quickly led to unintentional neglect.

Blackie's Future

Rehoming Fee: Not applicable. (Prime Pastures Scheme)

Blackie is good with vet visits, electric fencing and being left alone in the stable making him the ideal companion equine. A coastal area would be a perfect environment to help with his sweet itch, but this is not essential, provided any new carer has the time to dedicate to keeping his condition under control with rugs and regular grooming. He is a lovely boy and would be a great addition to any family.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Blackie as he settles in his new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
