Therapeutic Horses

The Healing and Transformative Power of Horses and Ponies

At The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, we offer a range of therapeutic equine-assisted programmes in partnership with our rescued horses and ponies to support both physical and mental wellbeing.

These ground-based activities take place at our peaceful sanctuary sites in Devon, where we provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, young people, and adults in our communities.

Through working alongside our rehabilitated horses and ponies, participants develop practical, transferable life skills and work towards individual social and emotional goals.

Our therapeutic equine-assisted programmes can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD and other mental health challenges. They also foster greater confidence, self-awareness, and empathy.

This powerful connection between humans and horses is rooted in the science of biophilia—our innate bond with nature—which is widely recognised for its benefits to both physical and mental health.

“Benjamin normally finds it difficult to regulate his emotions and can have sudden mood swings but here, because he knows he must be calm around the horses and ponies, he’s learning how to control his emotions, listen to instructions and deal with different situations. These are all lessons he will be able to take with him elsewhere in life.”
