In April 2019, we welcomed a foal named Icon and his mother, Ice, who had serious health issues. They were rescued as part of a multi-agency rescue involving over 100 equines.
Ice’s neglect was extensive, there was very little we could do except make her feel loved in her final days with us. We gave her all the love and comfort we could. Sadly, Icon’s first Christmas with us was spent as an orphan, surrounded by our grooms.
To support Icon through this time, we put two other recently weaned colt foals, River and Tinkerman with him, hoping that he would take an interest in them. The moment Icon noticed them over the fence, he ran up to them, and they started sniffing each other. Our grooms decided to introduce them properly and led Icon into their paddock.
Almost immediately, they began galloping around the field, chasing each other playfully. It was a joyful moment to see Icon find new comfort and kinship after the tragedy of losing his mother. Moments like this make our work worthwhile.
Icon has recently been rehomed to one of our Sanctuary at Home carers.
