Thorn

Thorn

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 16

Breed: Dartmoor Hill Pony

Height: 13.2HH

Gender: Mare

Colour/Markings: Skewbald

Personality
Thorn is a lovely girl who thrives when she is shown some attention. We feel she will flourish from the one-to-one attention she can get from living in a sanctuary at home.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Thorn does have sweet itch although this is easily managed with lotions and her rugs, which will come with her to her new home. She would not be suited to lush grazing. Poorer, restricted grazing would help to manage her weight as she is a native type that can easily put on weight.

Training Level:

Thorn is good to catch, load, and with the farrier. She is generally good to handle for an experienced handler. Thorn enjoys being groomed and having human attention once she has formed a bond with her carer. She will thrive in a home with one-to-one handling. Thorn can become unsettled with injections and has been trained using positive reinforcement which has been extremely successful. This would need to be continued regularly by her carer. We are able to provide training and support for this.

Thorn's Past

Thorn was originally from the moorland foal sales and came to us as a foal at foot with her dam.

Thorn's Future

Rehoming Fee: £50

Ideally, Thorn would like to live on a flatter paddock with more than one other equine for company. Thorn loves to explore any enrichment she is offered.

She would like a home where she doesn’t need to be stabled overnight as we have found that she does not sleep in the stable and can have sleep deprivation episodes there overnight. Thorn is happy being stabled during the day but sleeps better in the field when settled with her equine companions.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Thorn as she settles in her new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
