Personality
Thelma is a sweet-natured, quiet mare who enjoys a gentle fuss. She loves being groomed and will happily stand to be pampered.
Thelma enjoys one-to-one time with her handler and would be best suited to someone patient, calm and willing to take things at her pace. She is good for the vet and is gaining confidence with the farrier.
Health and Training
Health Status:
Before arriving at the Sanctuary, Thelma had been diagnosed with a heart murmur and experienced complications during the birth of her foal. She was carefully nursed back to health and has made a strong recovery. Following health checks at the Sanctuary, Thelma has been cleared of a heart murmur and has no other known health conditions. Her legs have been clipped due to a previous mite issue, and she is good to clip.
Training Level:
Thelma is confident with all aspects of handling. She has had positive reinforcement training to help build her confidence with the farrier, which will need to be maintained in her new home. Support will be provided so her carers can continue this in the same way. Thelma is now confident with the farrier and is seen every six weeks. She does best when things are taken slowly and she is given time to process.
Thelma's Past
Thelma was rescued with a foal at foot and was also pregnant. She later gave birth to her foal, Cindy. In early 2026, they arrived at the Sanctuary from a holding base.

Thelma's Future

Thelma would be best suited to a quieter yard with a calm, patient handler who can take the time to build her trust.
She has lived happily with mares and youngsters, and we feel she could also be introduced to geldings with careful management. She could suit either a small or large herd. Thelma currently lives out 24/7, but she enjoys coming in and could be part-stabled if needed.
Thelma is good to handle and is settled with both the farrier and vet when she is given time to process things at a pace that she finds comfortable. She has come into the yard on her own, but she has not yet been trialled alone in a field. Any move towards leaving her alone in her new home would need to be introduced gradually.
Thelma is based at Honeysuckle Farm in Newton Abbot and potential carers should expect to visit her 1-2 times.
