Health and Training

Health Status:

Smartie is susceptible to sweet itch. She has needed treatment for dental problems and has age-related mild stiffness in both hocks. She is looking for a home where her weight can be managed. Smartie is on daily medication for her mobility. She is being rehomed on our Prime Pastures scheme, where we can contribute towards the cost of her veterinary care.

Training Level:

Smartie is good with the vet and farrier.

Smartie's Past

Smartie came to us from another Southwest equine rescue charity when it closed. We sadly don’t have any details of her past life before coming to The Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

Smartie's Future

Rehoming Fee: £50

Smartie has been relaxed when left on her own in a stable so may be suitable as a companion for a ridden horse or pony, but this would need to be built on in a new environment, allowing her time to settle.

With correct grazing, shelter and rugs she could be happy living out 24/7 but equally could be stabled for part of the time. As she has sweet itch, a windy, exposed or coastal site would be the best match for her, but this is not essential.

She would best suit a home with a knowledgeable and dedicated carer.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Smartie as she settles in her new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
