Age: 16

Breed: Thoroughbred Cross

Height: 15hh

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Skewbald

Personality
Roo is a sweet, affectionate gelding who loves being groomed and fussed over, and really thrives with calm, one-to-one attention from his handler. In July 2025 he had his left eye removed due to a condition called non-ulcerative keratitis, but his right eye is healthy and unaffected. He has adapted well and continues to enjoy his routine. He is best suited to living with quiet gelding companions. Roo is well-mannered for both the vet and farrier and is a pleasure to have on the yard.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Following removal of his left eye to non-ulcerative keratitis, his recovery has gone very well. He will need six monthly checks of his right eye to make sure the same condition does not develop there, and he will need to wear a UV fly mask all year round to protect it. Roo has no other current health concerns.

Training Level:

Roo needs to have continued, ongoing training for applying fly spray and suncream, to ensure that he remains comfortable with these necessary applications. This is done using positive reinforcement using clicker training, and support will be provided on how to continue this.

Roo's Past

We don’t have many details about Roo’s past before he came to us, but our Sanctuary Care team members have had the chance to know and understand him well since.

Roo's Future

Rehoming Fee: £100

Roo would be well suited to a home with a gelding companion and could live happily in either a small or larger herd. Ideally, he would have 24/7 turnout, although a part stabled routine could also work for him.

He is easy to handle and would need 1–2 regular carers to provide consistent interaction and support. Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Roo as he settles in his new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Required number of visits: 2, Roo lives at our Honeysuckle Sanctuary, Near Newton Abbot.
