Phoenix

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 15

Breed: Miniature Shetland

Height: 8hh

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Chestnut

Personality
Phoenix is a very friendly boy. He is generally good to handle but will require a confident handler as at times. Phoenix enjoys going out for walks alone or in company, he can get excited going out walking and despite his small size, he does need someone experienced. Walking helps to manage his weight as well as a restricted diet during spring and over the summer. Phoenix occasionally enjoys a groom but this has to be on his terms else he doesn't enjoy it and will display adverse behaviours..

Health and Training

Health Status:

Phoenix has a mild hind limb lameness, he is not on any medication and he can continue with exercise, however this will ned monitoring. Phoenix had colic surgery in 2021.

Training Level:

Phoenix is in training for his back feet to be picked out. He is generally well behaved for the farrier, but he will require a calm handler that is confident on continuing with this. We can offer training and support for this.

Phoenix's Past

Phoenix arrived in the Sanctuary when we merged with another charity.

Phoenix's Future

Rehoming Fee: £50

Phoenix would best suit a yard where he has equine companions with similar needs of restricted grazing and weight management. Phoenix does respect electric fencing however he does know when the electric is turned off and will test this. Phoenix requires a confident handler to continue his training and to give him a good routine with a calm approach and would be best with an adult only home. He can be left on his own if he’s given hay and a treat ball, this will need building up in a new environment.

Phoenix is with a Sanctuary at Home carer in the Newton Abbot area so any successful applicants will need to be prepared to travel to meet him.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
