Personality
Margaret is a lovely mare who enjoys both herd life and one-to-one time with her handler. She is confident with the vet and farrier and, once settled in her environment, is easy to handle.
Health and Training
Health Status:
Margaret is currently paddock sound. When she arrived at the Sanctuary, she was very weak, which led to some low-grade lameness. This was managed with pain relief while she built up her muscle and strength. She no longer needs pain relief and is now sound. Margaret will need a lameness review with a vet in six months’ time to check her progress.
Training Level:
Margaret arrived at the Sanctuary unhandled. Since then, she has received training in all aspects of everyday handling and is now confident with this. She is good for the vet and stands well for the farrier when chaff is provided. She is now much more confident having her feet done and would benefit from an experienced person who can continue to build her confidence.
Margaret's Past
Margaret was rescued as part of a large multi-agency rescue in 2025. She arrived pregnant and gave birth to her foal Bowie in May 2025.

Margaret's Future

Margaret’s ideal home would be with a calm, experienced handler who can continue to build her confidence.
She could live in either a small or large herd. With us, she has lived with mares and youngsters, and she has previously lived in a large mixed herd. Margaret currently lives out 24/7, but comes in regularly, so she could also adapt to being part-stabled in the right home.
She has not been left alone in a field or stable. If this is something her new carers need to introduce, it would need to be done gradually and carefully.
Our lovely Icelandic horses have always lived in large herds and, wherever possible, we would like them to remain together. However, we are happy to consider a range of rehoming options to suit their needs and those of their new carers. They could be rehomed individually, as a pair, or as a small herd. We will consider each placement carefully, based on the applicant’s experience, facilities and ability to provide suitable companionship.
Margaret’s potential carers would need to visit her two to three times to get to know her. She is currently based at Honeysuckle Farm in Newton Abbot.
