Gabriel

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion as a bonded pair with Hugo

Age: 19

Breed: Spanish

Height: 15hh

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Grey

Personality
Gabriel is a kind, honest horse. He is more of a nervous type and would suit a home where it is just him and his companion Hugo as he does become anxious when there are lots of horses moving around.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Gabriel has melanomas, cataracts and mild lameness which would need to be monitored every six months by a vet. Financial support is offered under our Prime Pastures Scheme.

Training Level:

Gabriel is being trained using positive reinforcement for holding up his feet and syringe training. He is looking for a home that is local to one of our yards at either Holsworthy, Newton Abbot, Totnes or Yelverton, so that support can be given by our Sanctuary Care team. He will try his hardest for his handler and is coming along well with his training but would need someone interested in positive reinforcement to continue this.

Hugo, a flea-bitten grey Spanish gelding, stands emaciated inside a rescue vet stable.

Gabriel's Past

Hugo and Gabriel were found severely underweight and suffering with sores when we rescued them in June 2022. Our Welfare Outreach team worked hard to secure the best outcome for Hugo and Gabriel from start to finish, with assistance from the RSPCA to help us intervene as their welfare situation worsened. The pair were in urgent need of sanctuary.

Gabriel's Future

Rehoming Fee: £0

Gabriel’s Rehoming fee: not applicable. (Prime Pastures Scheme)

Gabriel’s ideal home is where it is just him and his companion Hugo, as he can become anxious when there is lots going on. Gabriel and Hugo will need to be rehomed to a location which is close to one of our four sanctuaries so that ongoing in person support is available. We have sites at Newton Abbot, Totnes, Yelverton and Holsworthy. Hugo and Gabriel must be rehomed together.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you, Gabriel and Hugo as they settle into their new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
