Alfie

Alfie

Available

Rehome Classification: Companion

Age: 14

Breed: Hill Pony

Height: 11.2hh

Gender: Gelding

Colour/Markings: Iron Grey

Personality
Alfie is very loveable, bold and learns new things quickly. He loves to explore any new enrichment offered. Alfie is good in the herd and seems to get on well with other horses. He is happy to be left when other equines are taken away to be exercised, making him the ideal companion pony.

Health and Training

Health Status:

Alfie has no known health conditions.

Training Level:

Alfie cannot be ridden or driven. He can be walked out in hand and has met traffic. He can also do in hand agility. He is good to catch, load and good with the farrier although he needs an experienced handler due to his boisterous nature and intelligence. Alfie has shown reluctance at being injected by the vet so continued training will be needed in his new home. He responds well to positive reinforcement and clicker training which has been extremely successful. This would need to be maintained by his carer, and we are able to provide training and support for this.

Alfie's Past

Alfie was born in the Sanctuary to dam Alice (bay Dartmoor Hill Pony) who came to us from Chagford Foal Sales and was wild on arrival and in foal. She has a very sweet temperament and came round quickly once we started handling her.

Alfie's Future

Rehoming Fee: £50

Alfie prefers to live out all year round but will settle in a stable if required. Being a smaller native pony, he is a good doer and will need his grazing restricted. He will need good, working electric fencing if being used.

Alfie would be best suited to a quiet home with one confident, regular handler who is prepared to spend the time handling him and forming a bond.

Our Rehoming Advisors are available to help every day of the year. We will work to support you and Alfie as he settles in his new home and can offer training and advice as needed.

Become a Sanctuary at Home Carer

To help you become a Sanctuary at Home Carer, we have a dedicated team managing our scheme and their job is to help find the right equine for you and then support you throughout your rehoming experience.

Our Pathways

We have three rehoming pathways within our Sanctuary at Home scheme. These are:

Prime Pastures

This scheme enables us to rehome horses and ponies with long-term medical conditions that are manageable. You'll be required to help support their condition with regular monitoring and we contribute towards the costs of their veterinary treatments.

Foster

Working alongside us to socialise and train young or rideable horses for future work in our education programmes. You'll help provide a home setting for these horses to mature before returning to the Sanctuary for further assessment. We work closely with you to keep up to date records of their training, achievements, milestones, setbacks and all aspects of their care.

Standard

Means you help provide a sanctuary at home for as many years as you can for a horse or pony from our charity on a loan basis.
