Our foal needs a name
Help us to name this adorable young Icelandic foal and discover more about our life-changing work with horses, ponies, people and nature
Last week we shared the news of a major welfare operation we were involved in to safeguard 70 rare-breed Icelandic horses in Devon. Read more here.
The Mare and Foal Sanctuary has given lifelong sanctuary to 13 of these stunning Icelandic horses and foals. We’re looking forward to sharing all their stories in coming months and hope that you will continue to follow their progress as we give them the loving care and training that they need to live long, safe and happy lives.
We wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without the help of incredible supporters like you who are so generous to follow us, share our news and kindly donate. And that’s why we would love you to name one of our new foals.
This beautiful colt is just four months old, and we don’t think his Sanctuary nickname ‘Winky’, suits him well enough. He came to us just a few weeks old in the summer, with his dam Mavis and another Icelandic mare and colt foal.
Completely unhandled on arrival, the little colts kept us entertained, enjoying ‘zoomies’ around the paddock, exploring their new environment and enthusiastically playing with all their new toys. Unfortunately, a giant teddy bear came off worse for the encounter!
‘Winky’ was originally quite reserved around people, often sticking close to the other colt but hesitant to join in. But he’s now gained confidence, grown and darkened a little in colour. Georgina, one of his carers, says: ‘He’s now a relaxed and confident young colt. He’s the first to come over for a groom and a fuss. He has started head collar training and will pick up all four feet, ready for farrier visits. It’s been a real privilege to spend these first few months with him and watch him blossom. With his bright blue eyes and stunning markings, he’s grown into a handsome young colt. But his story is missing one thing – a name. What would you call this curious, gentle little explorer?’
